Walk into a perfume shop and you're hit with jargon: EDP, EDT, parfum, notes, sillage. It's designed to feel exclusive. It isn't. Here's everything a beginner actually needs, in plain language.
Concentrations: the letters on the bottle
The "EDP/EDT" label tells you roughly how much fragrance oil is in the liquid (the rest is mostly alcohol). More oil generally means more strength and longevity.

The India-specific bit
Higher concentration isn't automatically "better" here. In peak summer, a heavy EDP can turn cloying on hot skin. Many enthusiasts keep a fresh EDT for summer days and a richer EDP for winter evenings.
Notes: top, heart and base
A fragrance unfolds over time in three stages, often drawn as a pyramid:
- Top notes — the first 5–15 minutes. Bright, fleeting (citrus, fruit).
- Heart notes — the main character, after 15–30 minutes (florals, spices).
- Base notes — the dry-down that lasts hours (woods, vanilla, musk).
When you smell something for the first three minutes, you're only smelling the top. Always wait for the dry-down before you judge — or buy.

- Sillage (see-yazh): the trail you leave behind you.
- Projection: how far the scent radiates from your skin.
- Longevity: how many hours it lasts.
- Accord: a blend of notes that reads as one smell (e.g. a "fresh" accord).
How to buy your first bottle (without regret)
- Sample first. Use decants or tester strips. Never blind-buy expensive bottles.
- Test on skin, not paper — and wait a few hours. Your skin changes the scent.
- Match it to your life. Office, college, weddings and dates want different vibes.
